Cocaine Withdrawal Symptoms
The cocaine withdrawal timeline isn’t usually as arduous or dangerous as what people experience when withdrawing from alcohol or opioids. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy.
Cocaine use alters the amount of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine in your system. When you use the drug for an extended period, your body will begin to rely on it to maintain appropriate levels of these essential neurotransmitters.
If you then abruptly stop using cocaine, your body may temporarily be unable to resume this function on its own. As your system works to reestablish internal equilibrium, imbalances in these chemicals can be sources of both physical discomfort and psychological distress.
Physical symptoms
The physical effects of cocaine withdrawal can include:
- Fatigue and exhaustion
- General weakness
- Slowed or sluggish movements
- Tics, tremors, or shakiness
- Severe headaches
- Excessive perspiration
- Appetite changes
- Insomnia or sleeping too much
Psychological symptoms
The psychological impact of withdrawing from cocaine may involve:
- Powerful cravings for cocaine
- Anxiety
- Agitation and irritability
- Panic and/or paranoia
- Depression
- Dysphoria (general sense of unease or dissatisfaction)
- Vivid nightmares
- Difficulty focusing and concentrating
- Memory problems
A person’s experience during cocaine withdrawal, including which symptoms they develop and how intense those symptoms become, can vary from one person to the next. Factors that can play a role include:
- Age and gender
- Amount and frequency of past cocaine use
- Abuse of other drugs
- Co-occurring medical or mental health concerns
Cocaine Withdrawal Timeline
As with the type and severity of a person’s withdrawal symptoms, their onset and duration can also be influenced by a range of factors. Generally speaking, though, the cocaine withdrawal timeline often consists of three phases:
- Phase 1: Initial withdrawal symptoms will typically start within 24 hours after a person stops using cocaine. Sometimes called the “acute” or “crash” phase, this period often involves intense cravings and overwhelming fatigue, along with anxiety, depression, and/or paranoia.
- Phase 2: Once initial symptoms have begun, they may intensify over the next three or four days. During this period, other symptoms may emerge as well. Usually, they reach peak intensity by day four, then slowly begin to subside over the next five to 10 days.
- Phase 3: For some people, cocaine withdrawal ends with phase two. For others, some symptoms may persist for weeks or even months. This experience is often referred to as protracted withdrawal or post-acute withdrawal syndrome (PAWS).
Benefits of Detox for Cocaine Withdrawal
Once way to make the cocaine withdrawal timeline less harrowing is to complete the process in a detoxification, or detox, program.
The benefits of detox vs. trying to endure withdrawal entirely on your own include:
- In detox, you’ll be under the care of professionals who are familiar with all aspects of withdrawal and prepared to address any contingencies that could occur.
- Your detox treatment team may provide both medical and therapeutic support to keep you safe, minimize the intensity of your symptoms, and help you maintain your motivation.
- At home, if your symptoms become intolerable, you can easily find temporary relief by acquiring and using cocaine. In a closely supervised detox environment, you won’t have access to addictive drugs, which removes the temptation and prevents immediate relapse.
As you near the end of your time in detox, your treatment team can help you determine the best type of follow-on treatment for you. Transferring directly into a residential or outpatient program protects you from immediate relapse as you work to establish a solid foothold in early recovery.
What Happens After You Complete Cocaine Withdrawal?
Getting through cocaine withdrawal, either on your own or in a detox program, can be a significant step toward a drug-free future. But withdrawal symptoms aren’t the only barriers you’ll encounter as you progress in your recovery.
If you don’t address the mental and behavioral health issues that contributed to – or were worsened by – your cocaine addiction, you may quickly find yourself back in the darkness of compulsive drug use.
Depending on your specific strengths and needs, you may be best served by spending time in a residential or outpatient treatment program. The many potential benefits of treatment include:
- Learning how to manage residual withdrawal symptoms
- Identifying your triggers, which are circumstances that could threaten your recovery
- Developing strategies for either avoiding your triggers or responding to them in a healthier manner, without resorting to cocaine use
- Coping with stress and controlling your emotions more effectively
- Starting to repair relationships that were damaged by your cocaine use
- Finding productive ways to fill the hours you used to spend seeking and using cocaine
- Building a strong personal support network
- Knowing when and how to ask for additional help when you’re struggling
- Beginning to heal from untreated trauma or other co-occurring mental health concerns
