What is Individual Psychotherapy?

Individual psychotherapy is what most people think of when they hear the word “therapy.” This is where you meet one-on-one with a licensed mental health professional to improve your mental and emotional well-being. It is also commonly called “talk therapy.”

You can talk to your therapist about any issue currently going on in your life or things from the past. By working through personal issues, you develop an awareness of your behavioral patterns as well as relapse triggers. This can help you consider making healthy choices in response to stress.

Types of Psychotherapy We Offer

We offer different types of psychotherapy in Tampa, Florida. While individual therapy might look the same on the outside, your sessions will vary based on the modality your therapist uses. In other words, the way your therapist helps you is different based on your needs.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Motivational Interviewing (MI)

Programs That Offer Individual Therapy

Partial Hospitalization Program

PHP programs, also called day treatment, offer structured programming six days a week. Most of the programming involves group sessions. Our clients get one session of individual therapy per week to work through personal issues that require one-on-one attention.

Intensive Outpatient Program

An IOP program is similar to PHP, except that the program schedule is much more flexible. This allows you to resume other responsibilities, such as going to work, attending school, or taking care of your family. Like PHP, you get one individual therapy session per week.

Regular Outpatient Program

During regular outpatient programming, you choose how often you need to see your therapist. Most clients come in once per week for an hourly session. This helps you continue treatment for lingering issues after completing higher levels of care.

Long-Term Rehab

At Tampa Bay Recovery Center, we offer a long-term rehab program for clients in addiction and dual-diagnosis treatment. This 90-day program includes detox, PHP, and IOP. Throughout your program, you will attend individual sessions with a trained therapist.

What is an Individual Therapy Session Like at Tampa Bay Recovery Center?

An individual therapy session will provide you with the privacy you need to open up about your current struggles with mental health and addiction. Our therapist will meet you in a safe and secure setting within our treatment facility. Oftentimes, individual therapy will augment your outpatient IOP or PHP program.

During your first session, your therapist will ask you questions about your background, family history, current living situation, and presenting concerns. This helps the therapist build out a treatment plan based on your needs. You and your therapist will also discuss what you hope to get from the sessions.

After the initial session, you’ll work on building skills to help you cope with stressors and triggers in the real world. In some sessions, you might need space to vent and feel heard. Other times, your therapist will need to ask pointed questions to draw out more information to help you.

In addition, while your sessions will focus on specific outcomes from your plan, there is flexibility in your sessions. For instance, if something new comes up in your life that you aren’t sure how to handle, you can discuss this during your session that week. Alternatively, new changes in life could shift your focus entirely—meaning that you need to alter your treatment plan.

Based on your diagnosis and presenting concerns, your therapist will suggest and work through a particular modality with you, such as CBT or DBT. You could also have “homework” between sessions, such as journaling, resolving a conflict with a loved one, or standing up for yourself at work.
