What is Individual Psychotherapy?

Individual psychotherapy is what most people think of when they hear the word “therapy.” This is where you meet one-on-one with a licensed mental health professional to improve your mental and emotional well-being. It is also commonly called “talk therapy.”

You can talk to your therapist about any issue currently going on in your life or things from the past. By working through personal issues, you develop an awareness of your behavioral patterns as well as relapse triggers. This can help you consider making healthy choices in response to stress.

During our psychotherapy in Tampa, Florida, we can help you through the following issues:

  • Replacing unhealthy beliefs and thinking patterns with healthy ones
  • Developing coping skills to manage stress and relapse triggers
  • Improving self-esteem and confidence
  • Coping with challenging life events, like grief, loss, and trauma
  • Setting boundaries and limits for healthy relationships
  • Regulating intense emotions
  • Managing impulse control
  • Learning more about yourself and how your past impacts you now

Your sessions will typically be one-on-one. However, there are times when your therapist could act as a mediator between you and a family member. For example, your spouse, sibling, or child could come into a session to work on specific issues in your relationship.

Furthermore, our therapist use different types of psychotherapy to best support you and your mental health needs.

Types of Psychotherapy We Offer

We offer different types of psychotherapy in Tampa, Florida. While individual therapy might look the same on the outside, your sessions will vary based on the modality your therapist uses. In other words, the way your therapist helps you is different based on your needs.

At Tampa Bay Recovery Center, we offer the following types of therapy

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is one of the most common types of therapy. During your sessions, you will address unhelpful thought patterns and beliefs driving your behaviors. By changing your thoughts, you can change the way you act.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT is a type of psychotherapy that derives from CBT. DBT is best for people who struggle with emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and all-or-nothing thinking. The main focus of DBT is accepting “dialectics”—or two ideas that are contradictory yet true at the same time.

Motivational Interviewing (MI)

MI is a short-term psychotherapy that helps you discover internal motivation for treatment. Sometimes, you lose sight of why you’re in treatment. Or, you could be in treatment due to external pressure. MI helps you find your own reasons to get better.

Substance Abuse Counseling

If you have an addiction or a dual-diagnosis disorder, substance abuse counseling will help you understand the nature of your addiction. That way, you can learn your addiction triggers and underlying causes. This will help to prevent relapses after treatment.

Accelerated Resolution Therapy

During ART, your therapist guides you through replacing negative mental images with positive ones. This is helpful for processing traumatic events and helps with a number of disorders, like PTSDanxietydepression, phobias, and substance abuse.

Programs That Offer Individual Therapy

All of our outpatient programs in Tampa, Florida, offer individual psychotherapy. Our programs have a mix of group therapy, psychoeducation, holistic approaches, and individual therapy. That way, you get a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses multiple issues at the same time.
Individual therapy is available at the following programs:

Partial Hospitalization Program

PHP programs, also called day treatment, offer structured programming six days a week. Most of the programming involves group sessions. Our clients get one session of individual therapy per week to work through personal issues that require one-on-one attention.

Intensive Outpatient Program

An IOP program is similar to PHP, except that the program schedule is much more flexible. This allows you to resume other responsibilities, such as going to work, attending school, or taking care of your family. Like PHP, you get one individual therapy session per week.

Regular Outpatient Program

During regular outpatient programming, you choose how often you need to see your therapist. Most clients come in once per week for an hourly session. This helps you continue treatment for lingering issues after completing higher levels of care.

Long-Term Rehab

At Tampa Bay Recovery Center, we offer a long-term rehab program for clients in addiction and dual-diagnosis treatment. This 90-day program includes detox, PHP, and IOP. Throughout your program, you will attend individual sessions with a trained therapist.

What is an Individual Therapy Session Like at Tampa Bay Recovery Center?

An individual therapy session will provide you with the privacy you need to open up about your current struggles with mental health and addiction. Our therapist will meet you in a safe and secure setting within our treatment facility. Oftentimes, individual therapy will augment your outpatient IOP or PHP program.

During your first session, your therapist will ask you questions about your background, family history, current living situation, and presenting concerns. This helps the therapist build out a treatment plan based on your needs. You and your therapist will also discuss what you hope to get from the sessions.

After the initial session, you’ll work on building skills to help you cope with stressors and triggers in the real world. In some sessions, you might need space to vent and feel heard. Other times, your therapist will need to ask pointed questions to draw out more information to help you.

In addition, while your sessions will focus on specific outcomes from your plan, there is flexibility in your sessions. For instance, if something new comes up in your life that you aren’t sure how to handle, you can discuss this during your session that week. Alternatively, new changes in life could shift your focus entirely—meaning that you need to alter your treatment plan.

Based on your diagnosis and presenting concerns, your therapist will suggest and work through a particular modality with you, such as CBT or DBT. You could also have “homework” between sessions, such as journaling, resolving a conflict with a loved one, or standing up for yourself at work.

How Effective is Individual Therapy?

According to the American Psychiatric Association (APA), “About 75 percent of people who enter psychotherapy show some benefit from it.”

The APA also notes the following ways that therapy helps, including:

  • Symptom relief
  • Better functioning in life
  • Improved emotional and psychological well-being
  • Positive changes in the brain and body
  • Fewer sick days and medical problems
  • Increased work satisfaction

However, individual therapy is just one aspect of comprehensive treatment. The following services can be a part of your treatment plan along with our psychotherapy in Tampa, Florida:

  • Family therapy helps you improve relationships with your family members and other loved ones. During family therapy, you will meet as a group to resolve conflicts and build healthy communication skills.
  • Brainspotting is a specialized therapy that treats underlying trauma, which often causes mental health and substance use disorders. Your therapist will identify “brain spots” in your visual field that trigger traumatic responses. After that, you will work through your trauma while fixing your gaze in this position.
  • Holistic approaches include things like yoga, breathwork, nutrition, and exercise. After all, addiction and mental health issues affect all aspects of your health and wellness.
  • Red light therapy is a type of holistic approach to treating mental health symptoms. Exposure to red light can improve your mood and emotional well-being.
  • Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) combines FDA-approved medications with behavioral therapy to treat alcohol and opioid use disorders. These medications reduce cravings and enable you to focus on your recovery.
