It’s time to put your health first. Call us right now to learn how we can help you break the cycle of addiction for good and create a new life of possibility
When you get the type and level of Xanax addiction treatment thatâs right for you, you can overcome your self-defeating urges and achieve a much healthier and more hopeful future. Prescription drug abuse is a dangerous and potentially deadly behavior. If you or someone that you care about has become dependent on Xanax or another prescription medication, please know that effective help is available.
What is Xanax?
Xanax is the brand name of a prescription medication that is commonly used to treat certain anxiety disorders and insomnia. The active ingredient in Xanax is alprazolam, which is a benzodiazepine.
Commonly known as benzos, benzodiazepines are depressants. This means that they produce a sense of relaxation and sedation. Other common benzos include Ativan (lorazepam), Klonopin (clonazepam), and Valium (diazepam).
When used as directed, Xanax can be extremely beneficial. But the misuse or intentional abuse of Xanax can lead to several negative outcomes, including addiction. When a person becomes addicted to this drug, they lose the ability to control the amount and frequency of their Xanax abuse. This puts them at risk for considerable harm.
Thankfully, addiction is a treatable disorder. When a person receives appropriate Xanax addiction treatment from a qualified provider, they can build a foundation for successful, long-term recovery.
Signs and Symptoms of Xanax Addiction
- You have tried to buy, borrow, or steal Xanax that was prescribed to someone else.
- You have visited several doctors and misrepresented their symptoms in an attempt to get multiple Xanax prescriptions (a practice that is often referred to as âdoctor shoppingâ).
- You become agitated or irritable when you canât use Xanax.
- You have begun to use Xanax in dangerous ways, such as combined with alcohol or other drugs.
- You need to use more Xanax to achieve the effects you are seeking.
- You have continued to use Xanax even after having personal, professional, or legal problems that resulted from prior use of the drug.
- You have tried to stop using Xanax, but you’ve been unable to do so.
The first step in getting Xanax addiction treatment is to complete an assessment with one of our admissions coordinators. Once that has been completed, we should be able to recommend appropriate treatment options.
Why is Xanax Abused?
Once a person has become addicted to Xanax, two factors can keep them trapped:
- They have powerful cravings to use Xanax again and again.
- When they canât (or donât) use Xanax, they experience painful Xanax withdrawal symptoms.
The first withdrawal symptoms may begin to appear within six to 24 hours of a personâs last dose.
During the first day or two of Xanax withdrawal, common symptoms include elevated drug cravings, exhaustion, agitation, irritability, disrupted sleep patterns, and extreme mood swings.
By the third day of Xanax withdrawal, a person may develop physical symptoms such as muscle pain, abdominal cramping, nausea, racing heart rate, blurred vision, and headaches. These symptoms may be accompanied by various forms of psychological distress, including confusion, paranoia, a sense of detachment from oneâs body, hallucinations, delusions, and panic.
The most intense symptoms of Xanax withdrawal usually begin to subside by the end of the first week. However, depending on the extent of the individualâs Xanax abuse, some symptoms may persist for two weeks or longer.
The combination of cravings and withdrawal symptoms can make it extremely difficult for a person to end their Xanax abuse on their own. But when a person enters a Xanax detox program, they can receive professional assistance to ease their distress. For many people, detox can be an ideal first step in the Xanax addiction treatment process.
