Can You Have Your Cell Phone in Rehab?

Can you have your cell phone in rehab? The answer to this question can depend on several factors, including which treatment center you’ve chosen and which program you’re enrolled in.

Some treatment centers have a blanket ban on cell phones. Others limit cell phone use to certain patients, times of the day, or levels of care.

For example:

  • One treatment center may prohibit cell phones for those in a detox or residential program, but allow them for people who are receiving outpatient treatment.
  • Another rehab may allow residential patients to have access to their cell phones during specified periods, but not keep the devices with them 24/7.
  • A third facility may confiscate cell phones upon admission, but return them to patients after they have been in treatment for an established period of time or reached a specific stage in their treatment.

At Tampa Bay Recovery Center, we allow patients in our partial hospitalization program (PHP) and intensive outpatient program (IOP) to have cell phones with them while they’re at our facility, but we request that they not use them during therapy sessions or other treatment activities.

Do Rehabs Restrict Internet Access?

A common follow-up question to, “Can you have your cell phone in rehab?” is “Can you bring other Internet-accessible devices with you?”

If you’ve already read the previous section, the answer to this question is going to sound familiar to you: It depends on the policies of the center where you’re receiving care.

Some centers may allow you to bring a laptop or tablet with you. Others prohibit them. Still others may have on-site computers that patients are allowed to use during approved times.

The only way to be sure which devices you can or cannot bring with you to rehab is to contact the center directly. Most centers send lists of approved and unapproved items to patients as part of the admissions process, but it never hurts to double-check or request clarification.

What Are the Benefits & Drawbacks of Having Your Cell Phone in Rehab?

Cell phones have been integrated into virtually every part of our lives. So why do some rehabs prohibit patients from having them or limit their use? And if they’re problematic, why do other centers allow people to have cell phones while they’re in rehab?

As is so often the case with questions about mental and behavioral health, there’s no single answer to either of these questions. But there are a range of factors to consider, including privacy, safety, progress, and need.

Privacy

Patient privacy is one of the primary areas of emphasis at any reputable rehab. It is also a fundamental element of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), a federal law that has been in effect since 1996.

If a patient used their cell phone to take photos or videos of others without their consent, that would be a serious breach of their privacy.

Safety

Perhaps the only thing more important than protecting a patient’s privacy is ensuring that they are safe throughout their time in rehab. Depending on how they are used, cell phones can both increase and undermine safety.

On the positive side, cell phones allow you to summon help in situations where you would be otherwise unable to do so. Reputable rehabs take great care to monitor patient activity, so it’s unlikely that you would be in this type of situation. But having your phone with you can be a source of comfort and security.

On the negative side, someone with a cell phone in rehab could use that device to contact a friend in an effort to sneak in drugs or other prohibited items. In addition to undermining their own recovery and putting themselves at risk, this type of action could also endanger other patients, staff, and visitors.

Progress

Every element of an effective treatment plan is designed to support one overarching goal: Helping patients get better.

If you’re in a residential program, having a cell phone can help you stay in touch with loved ones, which can be a source of both support and motivation. Looking at news or social media sites can also help you maintain sense of connection with the “outside world,” which can be beneficial to a certain level.

But if your loved ones aren’t supportive, their ability to access you while you’re in treatment could threaten your recovery. And depending on how you use them, news sites and social media platforms can also be quite detrimental to your mental health.

Need

Since they were first introduced, cell phones have evolved from a luxury to a need. They can be required for paying bills, monitoring your finances, getting updates from your child’s school, and taking care of work responsibilities.

One of the benefits of rehab is that it allows you to temporarily step away from the stresses of everyday life so that you can focus your full attention on your health. But some potential stressors, like the ones mentioned in the previous paragraph, don’t disappear simply because you’re in a treatment program.

In other words, you may have a vital need to use your cell phone while you’re in rehab. If so, you should discuss this with the center before you enter the program, just to be sure you won’t be prevented from taking care of any important responsibilities while you’re in treatment.
