TRICARE Plans & Regions
TRICARE offers several plan types, and the one you have affects how you access care and what you pay.
- TRICARE Prime is available to active duty and retired service members, Reserve members, and their families. Prime members have a primary care manager who acts as their main point of contact, and active duty members pay nothing out of pocket.Â
- TRICARE Select is a self-managed PPO plan available in the United States for those who are not on active duty, offering more flexibility to choose providers with some cost-sharing.Â
- TRICARE For Life is available to members who qualify for Medicare, providing secondary coverage that wraps around Medicare benefits.Â
Florida falls within the TRICARE East region, managed by Humana Military. Tampa Bay Recovery Center is a TRICARE-authorized provider, meaning your benefits apply here at in-network rates.
What TRICARE Covers for Addiction & Mental Health
TRICARE covers a wide range of substance use disorder treatment services, including detoxification, inpatient rehab, residential treatment, intensive outpatient programs, partial hospitalization programs, behavioral therapies, medication for addiction treatment, and office-based opioid treatment.Â
Mental health coverage is equally comprehensive. TRICARE covers individual therapy, group therapy, psychiatric medications, and crisis intervention services to support a range of mental health conditions. For veterans dealing with trauma, TRICARE covers trauma-informed care and specialized treatments including EMDR therapy.Â
Dual diagnosis, meaning a co-occurring mental health and substance use disorder, is also covered. This is especially relevant for the military community, where PTSD, depression, and anxiety frequently occur alongside substance use.
Authorization & Referrals
Whether you need a referral or prior authorization depends on your specific plan. TRICARE Prime requires a referral from your Primary Care Manager and pre-authorization before treatment begins, while TRICARE Select allows self-referral to TRICARE-authorized providers with some cost-sharing.Â
Emergency services, including detoxification and stabilization, do not require prior authorization. However, you will need approval for continued treatment beyond the emergency phase.Â
Our admissions team coordinates directly with TRICARE and Humana Military on your behalf to handle the authorization process, so you can focus on getting into treatment rather than navigating paperwork.Â
