What Is Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar disorder, formerly known as manic depression, is a mental health condition characterized by extreme mood swings. These range from depressive lows to manic highs and can occur a few times a year or more frequently. These mood swings are uncontrollable without professional help. Our specialized treatment programs guide individuals toward recognizing and managing their symptoms, helping them achieve a more balanced life.
Nearly 3% of U.S. Adults Had Bipolar Disorder in the Past Year
According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), “An estimated 2.8% of U.S. adults had bipolar disorder in the past year.” In addition, “An estimated 4.4% of U.S. adults experience bipolar disorder at some time in their lives.”
Signs and Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder symptoms are divided into two phases:
- Manic Phase:
- Excessive energy and talkativeness
- Euphoria and elevated mood
- Lack of sleep
- Difficulty concentrating
- Overconfidence and risky behavior
- Depressive Phase:
- Deep depression and hopelessness
- Sleeping too much or too little
- Fatigue and suicidal thoughts
- Trouble completing simple tasks
The Connection Between Bipolar Disorder and Addiction
Many individuals with untreated bipolar disorder develop substance use disorders, using drugs or alcohol to self-medicate. This risky behavior can lead to full-blown addiction. It is crucial to treat both conditions simultaneously through dual diagnosis programs, which address both mental health and addiction issues.
Dual Diagnosis Treatment in Tampa
Dual diagnosis treatment is essential for individuals with both bipolar disorder and substance use disorders. Failing to treat both conditions at the same time increases the risk of relapse. Our dual diagnosis program is specifically designed to address both issues simultaneously, providing comprehensive care for lasting recovery.
Our Programs for Bipolar Disorder
At Tampa Bay Recovery Center, we offer the following levels of care to support you as you progress in your treatment for bipolar disorder:
- Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): During our PHP program, you’ll get 6-8 hours of treatment five days per week. PHP programs offer comprehensive treatment, including group therapy sessions, one-on-one counseling, and psychoeducational instruction.
- Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): Similar to PHP in programming, our IOP program offers a scaled down version of treatment for greater flexibility. IOP programs occur 3-4 days per week with programming that lasts about 3-4 hours.
- Outpatient Rehab: Outpatient rehab programs mean that you don’t have to reside within a treatment facility during your program. Therefore, you can return home or to a sober living or other supportive housing program after treatment.
- Long-Term Rehab: We also offer a long-term rehab program so that you can progress through several levels of care within 90 days.
In addition, if you have bipolar disorder with a co-occurring substance use disorder, we offer the following to help you in your recovery:
- Detox: Detox programs help you manage withdrawal symptoms when you first stop using drugs or alcohol. During detox, you’ll get medical and psychological support during the acute phase of withdrawal—usually 1-2 weeks.
- Sober Living: If you don’t have safe and stable housing conducive to sobriety, our sober living homes can help you. You can live within a sober living home as you attend outpatient rehab and get your life back on track. In addition, sober living programs offer additional peer support groups and therapeutic programming.
- Virtual Addiction Treatment: For those who struggle to attend a treatment program due to transportation barriers or a busy schedule, virtual or telehealth programs may be an option for you.
